Pontiac Firebird (1992) – Ultimate Guide

Introduction

  • Pontiac announced the first Firebird convertible in 21 years in 1991 and only 2,000 were built. The open model was continued in 1992.
  • The full line consisted of:
    • Firebird
    • Firebird Formula
    • Trans Am
    • Trans Am GTA
  • The convertible was available as a base Firebird or as a Trans Am.
  • Other changes for 1992 included structural enhancements and non-asbestos brake pads.
  • New exterior paint colors added:
    • New Yellow
    • Dark Jade Gray Metallic
    • Dark Aqua Metallic
  • The interiors had revised AM/FM cassette radio graphics and new knobs and rings, plus a revised Beige interior.
  • Standard features of the base Firebird included
    • a 3.1-liter MPFI V-6
    • a five-speed manual transmission
    • the FE1 suspension
    • P215/65R15 tires
    • 15×7-in. Hi-Tech aluminum wheels
    • disc/drum brakes
    • a Delco ETR AM/FM stereo with auto-reverse, cassette and clock
  • The Firebird Formula added or substituted
    • a 5.0-liter EFI V-8
    • the WS6 Sport suspension
    • P245/50ZR16 tires
    • 15×7-in. deep-dish High-Tech aluminum wheels
    • air conditioning
    • and a leather appointment group with leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • The Trans Am added or substituted the following over the base Firebird features:
    • the 5.0-liter TRI V-8
    • the F41 Rally-Tuned suspension
    • P215/60R16 tires
    • 16×8-in. diamond-spoke wheels
    • a limited-slip differential
    • an aero package with special side treatment
    • and air conditioning
  • The Trans AM GTA added or substituted the following over the Trans Am:
    • the 5.7-liter TPI V-8
    • a four-speed automatic transmission
    • the WS6 Sport suspension
    • P245/50ZR16 tires
    • dual catalytic converters
    • a performance axle
    • a Delco ETR AM/FM stereo with CD and five-band equalizer
    • a power antenna
    • the leather appointment group
    • a four-way manual driver’s seat adjuster
    • power windows and door locks
    • cruise control
    • a remote deck lid release
    • a rear window defogger and power outside mirrors
  • Both convertibles came with a choice of Black or Beige cloth tops that stowed away neatly under a tonneau cover.
  • Both ragtops carried the aero package as standard equipment including
    • fog lights
    • brake cooling ducts in the front fascias
    • a distinctive body side treatment
  • The Trans Am convertible also had
    • functional hood louvers
    • air extractors
    • the available leather-clad articulated bucket seats
